Exercises
Week 9:
[caption id="attachment_428" align="aligncenter" width="500"]
This is what I chose to recreate. The main focus is the flowers and the melting effect of it. I will be using a regular portrait along with multiple pictures of flowers.
[caption id="attachment_458" align="aligncenter" width="1912"]
I used the black and white photo and recolored it as well as roughly painted over the background.[/caption]
Week 10:
[caption id="attachment_513" align="alignnone" width="1917"]
I added the intended flowers to the image.[/caption][caption id="attachment_514" align="alignnone" width="1917"]
I separated all the flowers so that it is easier to see what I am working with.[/caption][caption id="attachment_515" align="alignnone" width="1917"]
I position the flowers on the face using the reference image as a guideline.[/caption][caption id="attachment_516" align="alignnone" width="1917"]
I then flipped the portrait and erased the hair.[/caption][caption id="attachment_517" align="alignnone" width="1920"]
Then, I shaded the flowers to give depth.[/caption][caption id="attachment_518" align="alignnone" width="1917"]
I added some more shadows over the flowers.[/caption][caption id="attachment_519" align="alignnone" width="1917"]
Then using brush, I gave the flowers a melting effect.[/caption][caption id="attachment_520" align="alignnone" width="1917"]
Then I cropped the work into a similar size to the original.[/caption][caption id="attachment_521" align="alignnone" width="1920"]
I added some more melting.[/caption]
Week 11:
[caption id="attachment_522" align="alignnone" width="1920"]
I replaced the neck with another for a similar look to the original.[/caption][caption id="attachment_511" align="alignnone" width="2377"]
This is the final piece.[/caption]
Week 12:
This is the video that emphasizes the melting effect on the flowers.
Feedback
Week 9: Mr Martin said that this is a good piece to work on. I feel like it is not too overwhelming at the same time there is quite some detail.
Week 10: E-learning week.
Week 11: Mr Jeffrey said that it looks good, but that I have to try and replace the neck to match the shadows of the original image.
Reflections
Experience:
Week 9: I had some trouble in the beginning because I was not able to decide on a piece I want to recreate, but once I found this picture I decided that I really liked this one.
Week 10: I enjoyed getting into the details of the flowers. For me it felt therapeutic. I had some trouble achieving the melting effect, but after some research I am able to do it.
Week 11: It took me a while to find a replacement for the neck, and even then I had to recreate the shadows with brush.
Week 12: I had trouble finding out how to do the melting effect at first. I wanted to do it as realistically as possible. However, I was unable to find any videos that showed that, so I just adjusted the scale and position of the individual melting effects.
Observations:
Week 9: I realized that I used a lot of techniques that was taught in previous classes, i.e. when I had to recolor the picture.
Week 10: After shading below the flowers, it still didn't feel right to me.
Week 11: The brush I used for the melting effects was not really blending into the flowers.
Week 12: I did not separate the melting effects individually. I left them all in clusters.
Findings:
Week 9: Stock girl portrait photos of that particular position is pretty hard to find. An alternative could be to take my own portrait, but then I found the black and white portrait of a girl and decided to use that.
Week 10: Creating shadows on top of the flowers and giving it a filter makes it look more realistic.
Week 11: Turns out all I had to do was enable 'sample all layers'.
Week 12: Once I found out it would look weird in After Effects, I went back to Photoshop to separate them.
