Research Proposal

Lecture Notes

Lecture 1: Introduction to the module

Week 1 (30/08/19):
We started off with a briefing of the module information booklet as well as what to expect during the semester. We also had to present a few ideas of our problem statement to our lecturers Ms Hayati and Ms Jinchi.

Lecture 2:

Week 2 (06/09/19):
For this week we had to present a few paragraphs of our own writing to our respective tutorial's lecturer. For me, I had to see Ms Hayati. What we wrote had to show that we did some research of our topic, as well as show the sources of that information.

Lecture 3:

Week 3 (13/09/19):
We were to continue work on our proposal. Before this, I thought that Ms Hayati had accepted my research topic, but now she said that it was not a question but more of a statement.

Lecture 4:

Week 4 (20/09/19):
Submission. I changed my research topic from a question to statement.

Feedback

Week 1: No feedback as we were assigned our first work on this day.

Week 2: I should not separate my slides into weeks.

Week 3: Ms Hayati said that my research topic should be a statement, not a question.

Reflections

Experience:

First week and I don't exactly know what is going on. The module briefing was pretty informative but I am still not sure what I am to work on. We were told to find a research topic this week and mine was accepted.
I initially thought that there would be more lectures during class, but I went to the venue and just worked on my proposal. I would say that I am fairly new to this kind of module so I had no idea how to proceed even when I looked through my seniors' blogs.
After I mostly got everything done, Ms Hayati said that I should improve on my topic. It was a research statement, not a question. My original topic was "What makes a good character design good and a bad character design bad?"
I was thinking about how to rephrase it because I had already written the proposal and found a substantial amount of references, so I went with "The elements of a good character design and its impact on people."
In the end, my research statement is "Exploring different aspects of character design."

Observations:

I thought that we had to sort out the slides to show each week and our progress, because that was what I saw one of my seniors do, but Ms Hayati said that I have to show just the final result.
I was a little disheartened when Ms Hayati told me my research problem isn't really a research problem because I had everything else already thought out. I would appreciate it if she told me a little bit earlier rather than a week before our deadline.

Findings:

I found just showing the final result foreign to me because usually in previous modules I had taken, we were all required to elaborately show the process of how we got to the end point. I don't mind not showing though, I just have to get used to it.
I am still not sure on how to go about this module, but I figured if I constantly compared mine to my friends' work I can see where I misunderstood and how I need to improve.
