Reflections

Week 1: When we first received the project brief, I was at a loss of what to do. The team altogether weren’t able to fully comprehend what was the project about and how to carry out the process, as well as how this was related to our specializations. For this week it felt like we were stuck in limbo.

Week 2: This week, since we were at a loss of what to do, we were told to research OOH (out-of-home) companies. However, when we had a meeting with the other schools’  students, it felt like we were significantly lagging behind. We have to work harder to be on par with them. But as of right now, we are having difficulties in progressing with the project as we still have no idea how we are going to carry out the project.

Week 3: The design team was able to hold a meeting before the class this week. We tried to fill in as much of the project tracking document as possible, however we soon realized we cannot proceed much without the input of the computing and business teams.
Also during our consultation session with Mr Mike, we were told that the project overview was not what we were supposed to do. Since we were stuck in the dark most of the time, we were not sure how to go about our proposal.
We met up as a whole team with the computing and business students and soon realized that we were deviating off topic more than we thought.

Week 4: We were not too sure what to do still, but we have noticed that the computing team has made a lot of progress compared to us. I feel like we are falling behind, however no matter how much I think about what to do in this project, it feels like we don't really have much to contribute, We have the skills to create sample advertisements for the screen prototype we are working on, but it feels like we should be doing something more.

Week 5: During consultation with Mr Mike, we were told to research more on Rodeo (how they make themselves different from YouTube ads) as well as brainstorm the next big thing for OOH advertising. We also need to talk with the business students, because if our model is exactly like RODEO, we need to talk to brands. Also since, as we gathered the results from the survey, majority of users do not prefer to scan QR codes, we have to find a way to get the users to become more invested in the advertisements. We will be meeting with both the computing and business teams on Saturday to discuss and exchange ideas and information.

Week 6: This week, we confirmed with Mr Mike to make our e-hailing screen device interactive with the consumers. So this week, the design team met twice, first to discuss and complete the personas and finalize the logo sketch design and color palette. We also designed more survey questions and are planning to consult Mr Mike more about them.

Week 7: We were able to get references from Play Octopus’s website, as well as get a list of questions we wanted to base our survey on. My group mates had done research on Octopus’s live game prizes and their system. We also broke down the tablet flow of Octopus from the game to the ad and then another game, then another ad and the cycle repeats. I found that having research in advance for this proved beneficial.

Week 8: We immediately sent out our second survey after the consultation this week and started analyzing the second survey once it hit 75 respondents. From the survey we were able to use the data collected to develop our tablet features. Overall, from what we can conclude, most people would be inclined to purchase what is on sale or discount, play a game to win prizes, and scan a QR code for information on an ad shown on the tablet screen. It was very insightful on how people perceive this kind of digital advertising and it gave me a better understanding of how doing quantitative research is advantageous.

Week 9: For week 9, we worked on a draft wireframe as well as the art direction and the time duration and flowchart. We also went through several potential advertising clients. Also, once the wireframe was done, we carried out testing to a few people on how effective the tablet system would be to a first-time consumer’s eyes. From what I saw, we had several features in which the testers had no idea what was going on, and other features where the testers knew exactly where to go.

Week 10: For week 10, we worked on the mood board, so we decided on the typography for the headers and body as well as the color palette, as well as compiled several pictures of inspirations and references for this project. We also decided to go for organic shapes for the overall look of the brand.

Week 11: For week 11, we focused on the logo design quite heavily as even until now, we haven’t finalized our logo yet, even though it is the icon that represents the brand as a whole. We also didn’t have a solid art direction at this point in time so there was a time where we just freely chose what kind of colors we wanted for the logo. In the end however, we ended up with the original palette.

Week 12: At this point in time, we had to complete and finalize the logo by now, but we were struggling to keep with the feedback that Mr Mike gave us and our own interpretation of how the logo and brand should be. We tried out several logo color options and also worked on comparing two contenders for the final logo with rationales. In the end we went with the more rounded logo as our art direction had a very rounded elemental influence as well, which goes hand-in-hand.
We were also able to get the flowchart of the website and collateral website done, as well as the homescreen of the tablet mockup and the assets needed. Both were crucial and really helped ramp up progress.

Week 13: For this week we had a tablet mockup done on Adobe XD and simultaneously had quite a lot of the website done. However, we misheard what Mr Mike said for the previous consultation and coded the website from scratch, and we had a lot of feedback on the problems of our layout for the mockup. We also had to find a ‘fun’ font for the games to look more appealing in the tablet mockup. From this, we decided to do both the tablet and website mockups on Figma.

Week 14: During the last consultation, we were briefed once again on what we are supposed to produce at the end of the semester for the final submission. We also had gotten feedback on our tablet and website mockups, as well as the advertisements for the brand on Instagram and Facebook. We were supposed to submit what we had done during this week but since there were still several things we had not worked on, we were given an extension to the following week. I feel like it has lifted a little bit of stress off of us as we have more time to focus on working on all of our modules’ final submissions altogether.
